隨著智慧的增長,成年人若能自己掌握學習步調,也能和年輕人一樣學習得很好。Brookfield(1986)整合了Gibb, Miller, Kidd, Knox, Brundage and Mackeracher, Smith, and Darkenwald and Merriam等人的看法,提出了幾個成人學習的特徵,如下:
